The alignment may have to avoid a live water main, a fuel pipeline, a foundation or a protected tree, or it may have to follow a road center line or a river crossing so that the shafts can be placed on accessible land. Curving the drive is often the alternative to adding shafts, and each shaft it avoids removes a cost, a land take and a set of interfaces. That is the main reason curved microtunneling is considered at the route-planning stage rather than late in design.

The curve changes the jacking force, the guidance requirements and the stress distribution in the pipe, so a curved drive is a design decision with engineering consequences rather than a simple geometric variation. In our design reviews we treat every curve as a change to the force budget, not just to the plan drawing.

Obstacle avoidance: route the drive around a utility or structure that cannot be moved.

Alignment following: keep the pipeline under a road, rail corridor or river so that future maintenance is possible.

Shaft reduction: replace a chain of short straight drives with one longer curved drive.

Level change: a vertical curve can also be used where a horizontal curve alone will not clear a constraint.

The three drivers that set the minimum radius

The minimum radius is the tightest of three separate limits, and each has to be checked on its own. The first is how far each joint can articulate before its deflection limit is exceeded. The second is whether the pipe and its joint can carry the load and stay watertight when the joint is articulated. The third is whether the machine can actually be steered around the curve while maintaining the required line and grade.

A design is only as tight as the governing limit. If the joint can articulate to a tighter radius than the machine can follow, the geometry will still be set by the machine; if the machine is capable but the seal leaks when articulated, the seal governs. A radius transfers between projects only when the pipe type, length, wall thickness and machine are the same, which is why each figure is re-checked for the pipe actually proposed.

Driver

What it limits

What sets the limit

Joint deflection

How much each joint can rotate

The manufacturer’s permitted angular deflection per joint for the pipe type

Pipe and joint strength

Whether the articulated joint can carry axial and bending load

Wall thickness, concrete or material class, packer and collar design, joint seal

Machine steerability

Whether the machine can hold the design curve

Steering range, articulation of the machine body, guidance system, ground reaction

In design, the governing radius is the tightest of the three, and the joint check is normally carried using a named jacking design method – such as ATV A-161 or the CPAA Jacking Design Guidelines – rather than an assumed joint angle. Where the seal, not the geometry, is the binding limit, the remedy is a changed pipe or joint type rather than a tighter steering target.

How joint deflection sets the geometric limit

A jacked pipeline is a chain of rigid pipe sections, so the curve is not smooth; it is a series of straight chords with a small angle at each joint. The radius that the chain describes is therefore a function of the pipe length and the angle turned at each joint. The relationship is an illustration only: the governing radius for any pipe is the angle the manufacturer permits at each joint and the seal’s tested performance, confirmed for the specific pipe and machine.

Worked as an illustration only, a 2.5 m pipe turning 0.5° at each joint describes a radius of roughly 286 m, while the same pipe turning 1° at each joint describes roughly 143 m. Halving the pipe length roughly halves the radius for the same joint angle, which is why shorter pipes can reach tighter curves. To check a proposed alignment, compare the permitted joint deflection with the angle the curve demands: divide the pipe length by the tangent of the angle at each joint, and if the resulting radius is tighter than the alignment’s curve, the pipe length or the joint type has to change.

Figure 1. A curved drive is a chain of straight pipe sections, each turning a small angle at its joint. Radius is a function of pipe length and the angle deflected at each joint.

What radii are actually reported in the industry

If the question is whether a specific route can be laid on a curve – say a 500 m gravity sewer that has to bend around a live water main – the answer comes from how far each joint of the proposed pipe can deflect, because published figures come from different pipe types, lengths, wall thicknesses and conditions. The Pipe Jacking Association (PJA) reports that standard 2.5 m long pipes can be jacked to about a 200 m radius, and that shorter pipes can reach tighter curves, provided the manufacturer’s joint deflection guidelines are not exceeded and that special pipes and sealing mechanisms may be required.

Manufacturers and project reports cover a wider band. A manufacturer of hydraulic joints states that, at a usual wall thickness such as 180 mm, a minimum curve radius of about 100 m can be advanced with a 3 m pipe length. A published curved-sewer case report describes a 300 m radius horizontal curve over a 245 m drive and notes reports of extreme radii in the 60-80 m band, while one machine supplier states that a 50 m radius can be completed under the right conditions. Read these as planning references, not defaults: the 60–80 m band comes from published case reports attributed as reported, and the about 50 m radius is a machine supplier’s claim that applies only under the supplier’s stated conditions.

Every row is a reported radius from a named source and pairs the curve radius with the pipe length and the source type behind it, so the figure can be compared against the pipe actually proposed.

Minimum radius reported

Pipe length / context

Source type

About 200 m

Standard 2.5 m pipes

Pipe Jacking Association (PJA) guidance

About 100 m

3 m pipe, usual wall thickness such as 180 mm

Hydraulic joint manufacturer statement (vendor)

300 m radius over a 245 m drive

Curved sewer case report

Published curved-sewer case report (case-specific)

60-80 m band

Reported extreme curves

Reported extreme curves (attributed as reported)

About 50 m

Under the right conditions

Machine supplier claim (vendor, conditions-dependent)

Pipe stress and jacking force on a curve

Jacking pipes are rigid, so on a curve the deflection is concentrated at the joints and the jacking stresses are transferred across them. This concentrates load where the pipe is least able to spread it, and the axial load no longer passes cleanly through the center of the section. The result is an eccentric load path that reduces the effective axial capacity of the joint compared with a straight drive.

At the same time, the jacking force rises. On a curve the machine and the straight pipe sections behind it are deflected along the curve by reaction from the tunnel wall, which adds a lateral component and increases friction between the pipe and the ground. In our experience this effect builds along the drive, so a curved microtunneling design treats the curve as a load case in the jacking-force calculation rather than as a geometric detail.

The supporting numbers come from the same design machinery used for straight drives. Frictional forces in pipe jacking fall between 0.5 and 2.5 tonnes per square metre of external circumferential area and can be reduced to as little as 0.1 tonnes per square metre with lubricant injection at a nominal pressure above groundwater pressure. On a curve the deflection and the lateral reaction work against that lubrication, so the effective friction is generally higher than on a comparable straight run.

Figure 2. On a curve the axial load transfers eccentrically through an articulated joint. A hydraulic joint spreads the load over the full face to avoid a local peak in stress.

Hydraulic joints and articulated joints

Two joint types are used to manage the load path on a curve. An articulated joint lets the pipe sections rotate relative to one another, which is what allows a rigid pipe string to follow a curve. When the jacking load crosses an articulated joint through a narrow contact, it produces a peak stress and an eccentric load path; that is the condition a hydraulic joint is designed to remove. A hydraulic joint is an engineered pressure transfer ring designed for this duty: it gives full-face pressure transfer without a peak in stress even at large angles, and it reduces the eccentric loading normally seen when load is transferred through an articulated joint.

Because a hydraulic joint is instrumented, it can record joint fluid pressure and gap width continuously, which turns the joint into a monitoring point as well as a load path. That matters on a curved drive, where the articulation of each joint is a variable that can drift as the machine steers. Where a joint is not hydraulic, a pressure transfer ring can still be used to spread load over a larger area of the joint face.

Ground conditioning and lubrication also matter more on a curve. The annulus must stay lubricated to keep friction within the design envelope, and the fluid must not be lost into permeable or fissured ground, because loss of lubrication raises the jacking load exactly where the curve is already adding to it.

Pipe length and joint count: the trade-off

Pipe length is the main lever on the achievable radius, but it carries a counter-effect. Shorter pipes reduce the joint articulation angle for a given radius, which helps both the deflection limit and the seal, but they increase the number of joints in the drive. Every joint is a potential weak spot, an extra load transfer and a small addition to the time spent advancing the pipe string.

Standard concrete jacking pipes are normally 1.2-2.5 m long and vitrified clay jacking pipes normally 1.0-2.0 m long, so the geometry already reflects a compromise between handling and curvature. In practice, longer pipes with fewer joints are usually preferred where the radius allows, and shorter pipes are used only where the radius demands them. The decision is a project one, made against the manufacturer’s permitted joint deflection and the seal’s tested performance.

Choice

Effect on radius

Effect on the drive

Longer pipes (for example 2.5 m concrete, to BS EN 1916)

Larger minimum radius

Fewer joints, fewer weak spots, faster advance

Shorter pipes (for example 1.0-1.2 m clay, to BS EN 295-7)

Tighter minimum radius

More joints, more load transfers, slower advance

Guidance on a curved drive

Curved microtunneling places extra demands on guidance because the line of sight from the shaft is lost as the drive turns. A laser target system reaches about 200 m with a minimum tunnel diameter of 900 mm, but on a curve the beam must be relayed or the laser physically repositioned to keep line of sight. For drives over 200 m, and for curves generally, a gyro navigation system is used to track the machine independently of the laser.

Guidance data must be dense enough to steer with. A specification can require reporting at intervals no greater than 2 seconds, covering distance from the launch shaft, roll, inclination and attitude across the articulated section of the machine. The position of the machine is normally checked and recorded at least twice per installed pipe, and gyro audit campaigns are run between 120-170 m from the drive start and 100 m from the finish on man-entry drives. Our field teams record the curve entry tangent and each joint’s articulation as the machine advances, because a curve that starts off tangent is difficult to recover.

Checks to close out before committing to a curved alignment

A curved alignment is fixed only once its governing limit and the checks that follow are confirmed, because each can force a change to the radius or to the pipe. A municipal owner who has to accept the line, an EPC bidder who has to price the curve, and a third-party design consultant who has to sign the alignment all rely on the same numbers, and getting them before the design is frozen costs less than discovering them on site.

Allowable deflection per joint: the manufacturer’s permitted angular deflection for the specific pipe.

Seal performance when articulated: evidence that the joint seal stays watertight at the deflection the curve requires.

Jacking force margin: the curve load case carried through the design, with interjack positions set accordingly.

Guidance system: a method that can hold the line around the curve and report attitude frequently enough to steer.

Shaft positions and curve entry tangent: enough straight length either side of the curve to establish and exit it cleanly.

Ground conditions: mixed face, boulders or weak soils can make the machine deviate, which a curve magnifies; our field teams confirm the ground model against the as-driven articulation record as the drive advances.

The curve only changes the force budget and the guidance system; the underlying jacking-force components are set out in our microtunneling jacking forces guide, and the tolerance this curve has to hold is treated in our microtunneling design line, grade and tolerance guide.

Every radius and joint figure in this article is an input to project-specific design and must be confirmed by a competent engineer for the actual drive and the actual pipe. Shorter pipes lower the articulation angle needed at each joint, which works in the deflected-joint limit; the trade is more joints, so more load transfers and a slower advance.

What guidance is needed to hold a curved alignment?

A curved drive needs a guidance system that can hold the line around the curve, such as a laser total station with a relay or the laser physically repositioned, or a gyro navigation system. The machine position must be checked and reported regularly as the drive advances.

Key takeaways

The minimum radius is the tightest of three limits: joint deflection, pipe and seal strength, and machine steerability.

Fix the radius from the pipe and joint first, then confirm the machine can hold it: the joint deflection limit and the seal’s tested performance set the geometry, and machine steerability decides whether that geometry is deliverable in the ground.

Radius follows pipe length and joint angle, so check a proposed curve against the permitted angle at each joint before the alignment is frozen; if the pipe cannot turn that angle over its length, take the radius from a shorter pipe or a different joint type.

Published figures run from about a 200 m radius for standard 2.5 m pipes (Pipe Jacking Association) to about 100 m for one hydraulic joint manufacturer’s 3 m pipe, with tighter curves documented in specific cases.

On a curve the deflection concentrates at the joints, the axial load transfers eccentrically, and the jacking force increases.

Hydraulic joints spread the load full-face and record joint pressure and gap width; articulated joints need care to avoid peak stress.

All radii here are planning references; the actual radius must be confirmed for the pipe, the machine and the ground.

How JSW supports curved microtunneling design and delivery

JSW is a pipeline engineering and construction company that executes trenchless drives with its own crews and equipment.
