The practical depth limit for microtunneling shafts is set by the method that can hold the ground at that depth, not by how easily the soil can be dug, and the depth of cover over the pipe is a separate constraint again. The published envelopes above are indicative only and must be confirmed by a competent engineer for the actual drive, together with the dewatering or groundwater control that the shaft requires. In our design reviews the shaft method is fixed after the water table and the ground at the shaft base are confirmed, because a method that saves excavation but cannot hold the ground is the more expensive choice in the end.

How Is the Thrust Wall Sized as a Structural Element?

The wall carries the full jacking reaction, so it is designed for the maximum anticipated jacking force rather than treated as a convenient face of the shaft. If it moves, the pipe does not advance as planned and the shaft lining can be loaded in ways it was never designed to resist.

Where the ground is weak or the shaft is shallow, the reaction is often provided by piles, ground anchors or a purpose-built structural frame instead of the shaft wall alone. A thrust ring then spreads the load around the pipe circumference, and the jacks are hydraulically interconnected so that thrust stays equal; the number of jacks depends on pipe size, pipe strength, drive length and expected friction. The wall and the shaft lining are therefore designed together, because the reaction does not disappear when the drive ends.

Our field teams record the jacking force against distance from the launch every shift, so the reaction wall sees a controlled load history rather than a series of surprises, and any drift between predicted and measured force is picked up while there is still time to respond.

What Base Stability, Uplift and Flotation Checks Apply?

Below the water table, a shaft is a buoyant structure in soft ground, so base stability, uplift and flotation are checked alongside the structural design. These are the checks that decide whether the excavation can be kept dry and stable while the machine is launched and received.

Base stability. In soft cohesive ground the base can heave as the excavation is deepened, and the check is run against the depth of the shaft and the strength of the soil below the invert.

Uplift. Groundwater pressure on the base slab and lining has to be resisted by weight, anchorage or dewatering, and the design case is usually the deepest excavation stage.

Flotation. A lining, caisson or base slab can float before the permanent structure is complete, so ballast or temporary restraint may be needed during construction.

Groundwater control. The drawdown needed, the ground type and the sensitivity of nearby assets decide whether the shaft is pumped dry, dewatered by wellpoints or deep wells, or built as a wet caisson, and that choice sets the construction method and the settlement risk around it.

Base stability, uplift and flotation are checked together with the drive, because groundwater drawdown can cause settlement at the surface, which is the reason shaft design and settlement control are normally reviewed together.

How Do Shaft Positions Set Drive Length and Interjack Needs?

Shaft positions set the drive length, and drive length in turn sets the jacking force and the number of intermediate jacking stations required. Moving a shaft to save excavation can shorten the drive or lengthen it, and both have consequences for the jacking force and the pipe.

Indicative jacking lengths between shafts (Pipe Jacking Association members’ experience, subject to risk analysis, covering straight and curved drives): less than 0.9 m diameter about 150 m; 0.9 m about 200 m; 1.0 m about 250 m; 1.2 m about 450 m; 1.35 m about 550 m; 1.5 m about 700 m; 1.8 m about 900 m; 1.9–2.1 m about 1000 m.

Longer drives accumulate more friction and need more thrust, which is where intermediate jacking stations come in.

Intermediate jacking stations redistribute the total jacking force along the pipeline and also reduce the load transmitted to the shaft structure, which helps where the shaft ground is poor. Shaft positions therefore set the drive length, the drive length sets the jacking force, and the jacking force sets the intermediate jacking station spacing and the reaction the shaft must resist.

Frequently Asked Questions About Microtunneling Shaft Sizing

How big should a microtunneling launch shaft be?

A launch shaft is sized from the pipe outward: pipe outside diameter, plus working clearance and shoring thickness, plus the longest pipe section, plus the jacking frame and thrust wall depth, plus the base slab and working space below the invert. The internal dimension is governed by the pipe section length and the jacking equipment rather than by the pipe diameter alone, so the size is set per drive and confirmed against the selected machine and frame.

Why is a receiving shaft smaller than a launch shaft?

A receiving shaft only has to receive the machine and the seal, so it carries the machine and the seal rather than the jacking reaction, the jacking frame or a long pipe train. A common concept rule of thumb is the pipe outside diameter plus 1 to 2 m of working space, and that figure has to be confirmed for the specific machine, the seal assembly and the crew access required.

What determines the depth of a microtunneling shaft?

Shaft depth follows the pipe invert, the base slab and the working space below it, and the depth of cover over the drive, while the practical limit is set by the method that can hold the ground at that depth. The practical depth is then set by the method that can hold the ground and the water at that depth, and a deeper shaft is not automatically a better one: it costs more excavation, more dewatering and more base stability check.

How is the thrust wall sized?

The thrust wall must be designed for the maximum anticipated jacking force, and the Pipe Jacking Association is explicit that it provides the jacking reaction and must be designed for that load. Where the ground is weak or the shaft is shallow, piles, ground anchors or a structural reaction frame are used instead of relying on the shaft wall alone.

Do microtunneling shafts need dewatering?

Shafts below the water table normally need groundwater control, because base heave, uplift and running ground at the entry and exit eyes are all driven by water pressure. The method depends on depth, ground type and the sensitivity of surrounding assets, and it is a design decision rather than a site preference.

Can a microtunneling shaft become a permanent manhole?

A shaft is often designed as a permanent structure so it can serve as a manhole or access chamber after the drive is complete. Making that decision early affects the lining, the base, the cover and the finish, and it is usually cheaper than designing a temporary shaft and building a separate chamber later.

Key Takeaways

The size of microtunneling shafts follows from the pipe outside diameter, the pipe section length, the jacking frame and thrust wall, and the working space below the invert, not from the pipe diameter on its own.

The governing internal dimension is usually one pipe section length plus the jacking frame depth, while the depth is set by the invert, the base slab and the working space below the pipe.

Shaft type follows the ground and the groundwater at the required depth, so a smaller excavation is the cheaper option only where the method can still hold the ground.

The thrust wall is a structural element sized for the maximum anticipated jacking force, supported by a thrust ring and interconnected jacks.

Shaft type and depth follow published envelopes from the Pipe Jacking Association, but the selection depends on ground and groundwater and must be confirmed per drive.

Shaft positions set drive length, and drive length sets jacking force and intermediate jacking station needs.

Every range on this page is an input to project-specific design and must be confirmed by a competent engineer for the actual drive.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"
