On a long crossing with adequate cover and ground that holds fluid, drilling avoids the trench, the spoil haul and most of the reinstatement. On a 40 m shallow service crossing — a typical residential service connection — it does not.

What Is Open Cut Construction, and Why Is Its Footprint Largest?

Open cut excavation, also called cut-and-cover or trenching, buries a pipeline by opening the ground along the whole alignment, laying the pipe, then backfilling and reinstating.

Surface breaking. Asphalt saw-cut; topsoil stripped and stockpiled separately.

Trenching. Spoil stacked alongside the cut.

Dewatering. Below the water table the trench must be pumped.

Working corridor. Space for plant, spoil and laydown along the route.

Reinstatement. Imported bedding hauled in, surplus spoil hauled out, surface rebuilt.

Saw-cutting, trenching, dewatering, spoil haulage and layered reinstatement each carry a cost that a pipe-cost-per-metre figure hides.

What trench width does open cut need for a 900 mm pipeline? A top width of roughly 5 to 11 m (15-35 ft) inside a working corridor of 15 to 30 m (50-100 ft). Width grows with diameter and depth, so the corridor, not the pipe, sets the footprint.

How Does Horizontal Directional Drilling Cut Its Footprint?

Horizontal directional drilling (HDD, also called directional boring) is the steerable, surface-launched trenchless technology defined by ASTM F1962 and ASCE Manual of Practice 108. The rig keeps to the surface and drills a curved bore between an entry pit and an exit pit; the pipe is pulled back through.

HDD runs in three stages:

Pilot bore. A steerable drill head bores a pilot hole along the planned path, tracked by a locating system. Bentonite-based fluid lubricates the bore and carries cuttings out.

Reaming. A reamer is pulled back through the pilot hole, usually in several passes, until the bore is roughly 50% larger than the product pipe.

Pullback. The pipe, typically HDPE (high-density polyethylene) or steel, is attached to the drill string and pulled through.

HDD’s savings come from three differences, not from drilling being inherently clean: disturbed area collapses from a corridor to two pits, so soil moved can fall by an order of magnitude; machine hours drop sharply; and reinstatement largely disappears. Trenchless technology saves most where the trench dominates the disturbance.

See our horizontal directional drilling services page.

The bore passes below the watercourse bed, leaving banks and riparian vegetation intact.

HDD vs Open Cut: Environmental Impact at a Glance

The table summarises what matters most when trenchless technology and open cut are assessed side by side.

HDD vs open cut: environmental comparison for pipeline installation

Yếu tố

HDD

Open cut

Disturbed surface area

Pits only; surface disturbance is limited to the two pits and their access

Continuous corridor, typically 15–30 m (50–100 ft) wide

Soil moved

Pit spoil and bore cuttings; no imported bedding

Trench spoil hauled out; bedding hauled in

Vegetation and topsoil

Retained between pits; topsoil stripped at pits only

Cleared across the corridor; topsoil buried in backfill

Machine hours

Rig, mud pump and separation plant; two locations

Excavators, trucks, pumps, compactors along the route

Reinstatement

Pits only

Layered backfill, compaction, asphalt production, repaving

Watercourse crossing

Bore passes below the bed; channel never opened

Channel dammed and pumped, or flumed; sediment mobilised

Primary risk

Inadvertent return (frac-out) of drilling fluid; bentonite at 1–3%, non-toxic

Sediment-laden runoff and erosion; sediment impairs water quality

Traffic impact

Two short-duration pits; lane occupancy in days

Lane closures, detours, pavement reinstatement

Worker safety

Crew works at the surface; no personnel in the excavation

Deep-trench work: cave-in, falls and mobile-plant exposure

Reported carbon outcome

9.91 t CO2e for an equivalent renewal, 59.2% below open cut

24.29 t CO2e for the same renewal

Carbon Emissions and Energy Use: How Much Lower Is HDD?

Carbon emissions are the most quantified part of the HDD vs open cut comparison, and the gap is widest at a watercourse crossing, where the alternative must dam, pump or flume the channel.

A 2024 peer-reviewed study of partial sewer renewal in Brno, Czech Republic, reported a 59.2% carbon reduction for the trenchless option on the same renewal.

An environmental value engineering assessment at Bowling Green State University found trenchless construction can produce 78% to 100% lower greenhouse gas emissions than open-cut installation.

Why the gap is so wide

Earthmoving fuel. Trenching runs excavators, trucks, pumps and compactors for weeks; HDD runs a rig, pump and support plant from two locations.

Spoil and materials. Trench spoil is trucked out and bedding trucked in; bore cuttings are far less.

Surface materials. Asphalt saw-cutting, haulage and repaving are carbon-intensive and almost always avoided.

Schedule. A longer programme means more equipment hours and more temporary works.

Bottom line: the carbon emissions case in the HDD vs open cut comparison is not marginal; on a long crossing through stable ground it is most of the construction-phase carbon.

Our own experience matches the direction of these studies; the magnitude is what travels badly. Suspended sediment is one of the most widespread causes of river water quality impairment: it smothers gravel spawning habitat, cuts light penetration and stresses fish and invertebrates.

Under HDD, the bore is drilled below the bed, typically with several metres of cover, and the channel is never opened. Banks, bed and riparian vegetation stay in place. Only two pits are needed, each occupied for days rather than weeks, and the road stays open.

Getting an Environmental Comparison for Your Crossing

A useful comparison begins with complete project data: geotechnical results, utility locates, crossing length and depth, pipe material and diameter, groundwater conditions, surface use and permit constraints.

Then ask for two assessments on the same alignment, not one: disturbed area, spoil volume, carbon drivers and permit exposure.

JSW delivers the full chain of pipeline work around that decision: microtunneling for pit-launched crossings, and pipeline construction for open-cut and trenched work.

On the fabrication side we run automatic pipeline welding and pipe cold bending; on live systems, hot tapping and plugging and pipeline maintenance.

Because we execute rather than resell, our assessments rest on our own crews and equipment, and we recommend a method even when it is not the one we bid first.

Contact our engineering team with your alignment data for a side-by-side comparison.

Final Verdict: HDD vs Open Cut Environmental Impact

Across the studies above, the HDD vs open cut gap is driven by four things: whether a trench is opened at all, how much spoil is hauled, how much asphalt is reinstated, and how long plant sits on site.

Open cut has the lower net impact under the site conditions set out above; check them before ruling it out.

To settle it on your own project, fix one functional unit, apply the same boundary to both methods, then compare disturbed area, spoil volume, energy use and permit exposure side by side.

Want the comparison on paper? Send your alignment, geotechnical report and permit constraints, and JSW engineers will return a side-by-side assessment of disturbed area, spoil volume and permit exposure.

Send My Alignment Data

Standards and Reports Consulted

ASTM F1962, maxi-horizontal directional drilling for polyethylene pipe or conduit under obstacles, including river crossings — current revision.

ASCE Manual of Practice 108, Pipeline Design for Installation by Horizontal Directional Drilling — current edition.

NASTT HDD and Microtunneling Good Practices Guidelines, current editions.

Peer-reviewed 2024 comparison of trenchless and excavation technologies in the restoration of a sewage network and their carbon footprints, Brno University of Technology.

Environmental value engineering assessment of directional drilling, Bowling Green State University.

US Army Corps of Engineers Section 404 guidance and state Section 401 certification (33 CFR Part 332); regulator guidance on HDD monitoring and inadvertent-return plans.

Short answer: on most crossings, drilling has the lower environmental impact, because it avoids a continuous trench.
